Berry Fun Time

Something I've wanted to do the past couple of summers here is to go pick berries. This Saturday we finally made it! We headed to Apple Jack Orchards and picked strawberries in the strawberry patch!

The patch was about 30-35 minutes away, so not too bad. The strawberry patch was a lot bigger than I expected so we got to just pick and choose where we wanted to pick. They give you a fun little basket with a cardboard flat and you just pick as much as you want. We ended up with a little over 6 pounds for only $11 - not bad!

And now for the fun part - strawberry desserts! Last night I made strawberry oatmeal bars - yums. Then today Michael and I decided to make jam for the first time ever. I have to say the process was a lot more tedious than I expected. The actual strawberry & sugar part wasn't bad but I wasn't really a fan of sterilizing all the jars, sealing them in a water bath, etc. But the end result was good - we now have 8 jars of jam that seemed to all properly seal as they were supposed to. :) Then after dinner, Michael made us some strawberry milkshakes - SO good!

Here are the pics from our strawberry adventure:

Looking out over the patch
Just picked the first berry!

They were so shiny and pretty - and they grow in clusters which I was surprised by.

Making jam! My kitchen was a MESS afterwards!
