Walnut Grove is about 2 1/2 hours from where we live. I expected it would have been a little small city with McDonalds, car dealerships, etc. Boy was I wrong! There were only about 600 people that live in the town! It's basically a little town made up of a railroad track, grain elevator, a few blocks of houses, a couple of churches and a lot of corn and soybean fields.
First we went to the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum which had pictures, artifacts, timelines, etc of Laura's life. They also had replicas of the little schoolhouse where she went to school, the church, etc. The church bell that "Pa" Ingalls bought for the church with the $3.00 he was going to use for new boots is actually still hung in the Lutheran Church there in WG. They had a really neat little gift shop...it was PACKED so much you could hardly walk around.

For dinner we went to Nellie's cafe...probably the only restaurant in WG, only about 7-8 tables. Then we went to see the actual site of where the Ingalls lived, next to Plum Creek. We also saw the site where the church and school were, which is about 1.5 miles away from the Ingalls home (for those other LHOTP fans). :)
After seeing the sites at Plum Creek, we headed back to town for the Wilder Days pagent. It was a play set in this neat little outdoor theater that showed some of the things that happened during the Ingalls time in Walnut Grove (building the church, grasshoper plague, Mary going blind, etc). It was a really neat play! What a fun day in WG!
